If there’s one game that (assuming you’re a Gen-Z teen with access to the internet) everyone has at least heard of, it’s Roblox. Yet,with hundreds of millions of active users, the Roblox platform isn’t actually a game - instead, it’s a content creation platform for game developers, who can use the site’s Roblox Studio function to create games for users. Many Roblox developers are actually within the same age range as Roblox users - anywhere between 5 to 25 years old. With a huge and young demographic, Roblox has created a unique financial ecosystem to generate profit for the company.

While Roblox operates on a freemium basis, where you can enter and technically play games for free, all players buy and sell with the online currency, Robux. At this point, beyond just any in-app currency like genesis crystals in Genshin Impact or V-Bucks in Fortnite, the Robux has developed many of the financial intricacies of currencies in the real world. You can buy, sell,  earn and gamble  Robux, work nine-to-five jobs, auction off bought items at higher prices, and create point systems within games that can be converted to Robux for players. Developers can even trade Robux for actual money. A lot of Roblox’s cash is generated with this currency ecosystem - for players, $1.25 in real life is worth $100 Robux, while for Developers, the same amount of Robux gives them just $0.35. Where does the rest of the cash generated go? Well, it goes to Roblox. That’s how they’ve dominated other competitors like Nintendo, XBox and Steam with 350 million monthly users.

The complexity of the Roblox financial system makes it a challenge for kids and teens to navigate. It’s incredibly hard to keep track of money when it exists in such complicated systems, and the value exchange for both developers and players means that money can get lost easily. Especially with gaming scams and glitches that can lead to the loss of Robux (which basically means the loss of real money), Roblox can become a spending trap incredibly fast. The next time you’re on Roblox, think about where your Robux, and your real bucks, are ending up.
